Article
Oliver McGowan died in 2016 at a hospital in Bristol, England, after receiving medication his family had warned against. Recently, his mother learned that staff members may have looked at his private medical records without proper reason, even years after his death. At least five people accessed his files, with some doing so as recently as this year. This discovery has caused Paula McGowan significant pain and worry.
Unauthorized Access and Investigation
When Paula McGowan requested details about who had viewed her son's records, she was told 38 people had accessed them, viewing 637 items and printing 67 pages. Most of this access was legitimate and connected to legal matters and an official inquiry into Oliver's death. However, three nurses not involved in his care are now under formal investigation because their reasons for looking at the files remain unclear. One nurse apparently wanted to read about anti-psychotic drugs out of general interest, not medical necessity.
A Wider Problem in the NHS
This case highlights a broader concern across the British health service. In the past five years, around 2,000 NHS staff have faced discipline for improperly accessing patient records, with at least 214 losing their jobs. The hospital trust has voluntarily reported itself to authorities and is examining 13 additional cases. Officials have warned that staff members risk job loss or criminal charges for breaching patient privacy.
