Since May, at least 32 children have died in remote villages of Balaghat district in central India, primarily from measles and malaria, according to local officials. The victims, ranging from infants to teenagers, were predominantly Baiga, a tribal community classified among India's most vulnerable populations. Bamita Markam, a three-year-old, exemplifies the pattern: she developed a high fever and distinctive red sores, was treated by a local doctor and a faith healer, but died within days as her family watched helplessly. The case illustrates both the medical challenge these communities face and the limited resources available to respond.
