Article

A businessman in England experienced a violent home invasion when masked attackers broke into his house demanding access to his cryptocurrency. The men, armed with hammers, beat him severely and threatened to harm his heavily pregnant wife unless he transferred his digital savings. After nearly an hour of assault, the man handed over hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of cryptocurrency to someone directing the attack through a video call. Police are investigating the incident, and experts warn that these violent robberies are becoming more common among people who own digital coins.

What Are Wrench Attacks?

Security experts call these crimes "wrench attacks" because criminals use physical force to extract money or information from victims. Unlike traditional bank robberies, which target institutions, these attacks focus on individuals known to own cryptocurrency. The attackers in this case appeared to know their victim owned digital assets but lacked the technical skill to access them alone. They used a video call to receive instructions from someone orchestrating the theft remotely, demonstrating how these crimes often involve multiple people working together.

Why Cryptocurrency Makes Targets Vulnerable

Cryptocurrency differs fundamentally from money in regular bank accounts. When someone owns digital coins, they control them directly through private codes rather than relying on a bank for protection. This means once money is transferred to a criminal's digital wallet, recovering it is extremely difficult. For criminals, cryptocurrency offers speed, anonymity, and irreversibility, making crypto owners increasingly attractive targets for violent theft across the UK, France, and the United States.
