Sue Nyathi is a writer from Zimbabwe. She wrote a book called The Polygamist. The book became very popular on Netflix. Now people around the world watch the story. Sue paid for her first book herself because no one gave her money to write it.
Writing Without Help
Sue did not have a publisher to help her. She did not have rich sponsors. Instead, she spent her own money to print her book and share it. This is difficult. Most writers need money to write. They need money to live, to buy paper, and to tell people about their work.
Women See Their Lives in the Story
Many women watch The Polygamist on Netflix. They say the story is about their lives. The main character is a woman in a difficult situation. Women tell Sue that they see themselves in the character. They feel that someone finally told their story in an honest way.
An Important Question
Sue asks a big question now. She asks: who can really write a book? If you need money to write, then only rich people can be authors. Poor people with good stories cannot share them. Sue thinks this is not fair. She wants other writers to have the help she did not get.
Making Space for New Voices
Sue's success shows something important. Stories from Africa matter. Stories about women matter. But these stories only reach the world if someone pays for them. Sue worked very hard to share her voice. Now she wants to help other writers do the same.
