Work is a big part of our life. We spend many hours with our coworkers. Sometimes the people at work give gifts to each other. The group asks for money. Everyone gives some dollars. But this can be hard. People do not always know how much to give.
What is an Office Whip-Round?
A whip-round is when coworkers collect money together. They do this for a gift. Maybe someone is leaving the job. Maybe someone is getting married. Maybe someone has a birthday. One person asks everyone for money. Each person gives some.
The Problem with Money
People feel bad about this. Some people do not have much money. They feel worried. They do not want to give money. But they do not want to say no. Some people do not like the person who gets the gift. But they still give money. This feels wrong.
How Much Money?
There is no right answer. Some offices give five dollars. Some give ten dollars. Some give twenty dollars. It depends on the job. It depends on the office. It depends on your money. You should give what you can.
What Should You Do?
Talk to your office. Make new rules. Tell people how much to give. Tell them what gifts to buy. This helps everyone. No one feels bad. No one worries. Everyone knows what to do.
You Can Say No
It is okay to say no. You can say you do not have money now. You can say you do not want to give. Your coworkers should understand. Good workplaces listen to people. They do not force you to give money.
