Article

Artificial intelligence is coming to hospitals in the United Kingdom. Soon, doctors will use AI tools to help them work faster and better. However, government officials say the country needs new laws to control how AI is used in medicine.

What is the Problem?

Lawrence Tallon is the chief of the MHRA, which is the organization that checks if medicines are safe. He told the BBC that AI will soon be a normal part of the National Health Service, or NHS. The NHS is the main healthcare system in Britain. Tallon says the government must make new rules before this happens.

Why Do We Need Rules?

When computers help doctors make decisions, we need to make sure the AI is correct and fair. New laws would check that AI tools are safe and that they work the same way for all patients. Rules would also protect people's private health information.

How Can AI Help?

AI can look at medical images very quickly and spot problems that doctors might miss. It can also help doctors organize patient information and find the best treatment. These tools can save time and help sick people get better care.

What Comes Next?

The UK government is working on these new laws now. Officials must decide what rules are most important. They must also make sure the rules are not too difficult for hospitals to follow. Creating good rules takes time, but protecting patients is very important.
