Article

Dentists are noticing something new in their offices. More young people are grinding their teeth at night or during stressful moments. This habit is called bruxism, and many people do not even realize it is happening to them. The problem is becoming more common, and doctors want to understand why.

What Is Teeth Grinding?

Teeth grinding occurs when a person closes their jaw with force, making their upper and lower teeth rub together. This can happen while sleeping or while awake. Some people grind their teeth without hearing it or feeling it. Others wake up with a sore jaw or hear the grinding sound during the night. Over time, this habit wears down the tooth surface and can cause pain.

Why Are Young People Grinding More?

Stress and anxiety appear to be the main causes. Young people today face pressure from school, work, and social media. When stressed, the body tightens muscles, including those in the jaw. Sleep problems also increase grinding. If a person does not sleep well, they are more likely to grind their teeth through the night.

Treatment Options

Dentists recommend several treatments. A night guard is a simple plastic device that protects the teeth while a person sleeps. Reducing stress through exercise, meditation, or counseling can help. Some people benefit from limiting caffeine before bedtime. Doctors may also suggest relaxation techniques to help the jaw muscles relax.

Why Treatment Matters

Getting the right treatment early can prevent serious damage. Untreated grinding leads to worn teeth, jaw pain, and expensive dental repairs. People who receive help often feel much better and sleep more peacefully. If you wake up with jaw pain or think you grind your teeth, talking to a dentist is a good first step.
