Nikon disqualified the winner of its Small World in Motion contest after determining that the submission incorporated generative AI in ways that violated competition rules. The winning video, submitted by Dr Ning Xu from Tsinghua University, depicted cilia, hair-like structures in the airways of a child with PCD, a respiratory condition. Although Xu acknowledged using AI during creation, he initially believed his approach complied with the contest guidelines. Nikon's decision followed consultation with its judging panel and came after multiple scientists, including former competition judges, raised concerns about the video's authenticity on public forums.
