Article
Ukraine's former military commander, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, claims his country has successfully halted Russia's advance by inflicting enormous casualties. In his first public interview since losing his job this summer, Syrskyi argued that Moscow's overall losses were six times higher than Ukraine's, and up to eleven times higher when counting only deaths. He attributes the current stalemate at the front line to this disparity in casualties, combined with Ukraine's tactical strategy of attacking Russian weak points while defending other positions.
A Dismissal and Its Causes
Syrskyi was fired by President Volodymyr Zelensky following a major disagreement with the defence minister over how to supply and equip the army. Critics had questioned whether Syrskyi, an experienced older commander, was suited to lead modern technological warfare. However, Syrskyi defended his decisions, claiming the defence minister had created supply imbalances by prioritising drones over essential frontline equipment like vehicles and motorcycles. Street protests eventually forced Zelensky to remove Syrskyi from his position and replace him with a younger general.
Territory and Technological Advantage
Statistics suggest the front line has truly stabilised. In the first half of 2026, Russia seized only 61 square kilometres, a dramatic decline from earlier in the war. Independent analysts at the Institute for Study of War confirmed that in September 2026, Moscow lost more territory than it gained. Syrskyi credited Ukraine's ability to combine defensive positions with technological advances as the key to containing Russian expansion and creating the current military stalemate.
