Pope Leo XIV, 71, announced on Sunday that he would undergo surgery to remove a growth detected on his right lung. The nodule had been discovered during routine medical checks and subsequently identified as pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer. Although the pontiff described the growth as contained and caught at an early stage, his medical team recommended surgical removal. The decision to proceed reflected both medical prudence and practical timing: an extended Latin American tour was scheduled for November, and the Pope wished to maintain that commitment.
