A day of largely peaceful demonstrations in France deteriorated into widespread rioting and looting on Saturday, prompting President Emmanuel Macron to deliver a national address calling for restraint. Around 550,000 people had protested against rising fuel prices, the cost of living, and deteriorating public services. However, separate groups engaged in destruction across Paris, Marseille, Lille, and other cities, looting shops and setting fires to vehicles and buildings. Macron distinguished between the legitimate grievances of most protesters and the actions of those who engaged in violence, warning that such behavior would face legal consequences.
