Researchers have completed a major trial of a new personalised cancer vaccine designed to work alongside existing immunotherapy. In the study of 1,137 melanoma patients, those receiving the experimental vaccine alongside the drug Keytruda showed a 42% reduction in the risk of death or disease recurrence compared to those receiving immunotherapy alone. The vaccine, called Intismeran, uses messenger RNA technology to train each patient's immune system to recognise and attack their specific cancer cells. These results suggest personalised medicine may represent a significant shift in how advanced cancers are treated after surgery.
