The British Medical Association represents these senior hospital physicians, who argue that despite receiving a 3.5 percent pay raise this year, their actual earnings have declined by roughly one quarter over the past seventeen years when adjusted for inflation. The strike follows failed negotiations with the government and a July ballot in which 76 percent of participating members voted to proceed with industrial action.
