Two major blockchain analysts have identified a North Korean state-backed hacking group, known as Lazarus Group or TraderTraitor, as the likely perpetrators of a 6.3 billion dollar theft from Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange. TRM Labs and Chainalysis reached this conclusion with high confidence by analyzing patterns in the stolen funds. This incident represents another significant cyberattack attributed to North Korea, a nation with severely restricted internet access that experts believe uses cybercrime to generate revenue for its government. Pyongyang has consistently denied involvement in such activities, despite mounting evidence linking state-sponsored groups to major thefts.
