Trillions of dollars in market value disappeared from major technology companies across the United States, Europe, and Asia following the US midterm elections, which delivered control of Congress to Democrats who campaigned on restricting artificial intelligence development. The Nasdaq composite index fell more than 5.5 percent on Thursday, erasing an estimated $2.5 trillion in value. This decline represents one of the worst trading days for US stock indexes since 2025. The sell-off reflects investor anxiety that stricter regulation of data centres and AI infrastructure may slow the technology's growth and undermine the enormous spending corporations have committed to the sector.
