How to Get Stakeholders Aligned

Misaligned stakeholders derail projects. Getting them aligned — before decisions, not after — is a core leadership skill. Here's how to bring different interests together and build real agreement.

Understand each interest

Before aligning anyone, learn what each stakeholder actually wants and fears. Alignment starts with understanding — you can't bridge interests you haven't heard. Ask, listen, and map where they agree and diverge.

Find and lead with shared goals

Almost every stakeholder shares some higher goal. Anchor the conversation there: 'We all want X.' Starting from common ground makes the differences feel smaller and solvable.

Align before the room, not in it

Big alignment rarely happens live. Have the individual conversations first, address concerns privately, and build agreement one-on-one — so the group meeting confirms alignment rather than fighting for it.
