How to Counter a Job Offer (Email Template)

A job offer is the start of a negotiation, not the end. Countering well — in writing — can add real money. Here's how to counter a job offer professionally.

Lead with enthusiasm

Open by reaffirming your excitement: 'Thank you — I'm thrilled about this opportunity.' Warmth first makes the negotiation collaborative, not adversarial, and reassures them you want the job.

Make a specific, justified ask

'Based on my experience and the market, I'd like to discuss the base salary — I was hoping for closer to X.' Be specific and back it with value. Vague or apologetic counters get less.

Keep it collaborative

Signal you want to make it work: 'I'm confident we can find a package that works for both of us.' A confident, warm counter respects them and usually gets a real response — often a better offer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I counter a job offer?

Lead with enthusiasm, make a specific ask justified by your value, and keep the tone collaborative.

Should I counter in writing?

Email works well — it's clear, keeps a record, and gives both sides time to think.

Will countering risk the offer?

Rarely, if done warmly and professionally — most employers expect a counter.
