The opening ask

'I'm excited about the role. Based on my experience and the market, I was expecting something closer to X — is there flexibility?' Confident, specific, and framed around value, not need.

Justify with value

'In my last role I delivered X, and I'm confident I'll bring the same here.' Anchor your number on the value you provide, not personal expenses. Value justifies the ask.

Hold the pause

After you make the ask, stop talking. Silence is uncomfortable, so we tend to backpedal — don't. Make the ask cleanly and let them respond. That pause often earns you the increase.
