Executive Coaching vs. English Tutoring: Which One Does Your Career Actually Need?

A client came to me two years ago convinced his English was blocking his promotion. We did one diagnostic session, and I told him something he did not expect: his English was fine. His positioning was the problem — he spoke like a specialist reporting upward, not like a peer of the people above him.
Six months of coaching later — strategy, presence, and how to talk about his work — he was promoted. His grammar never changed.
A month after that, a different client arrived asking for executive coaching. Within twenty minutes I could see the reverse: her thinking was superb, but her English made her ideas arrive smaller than they were. She needed language first. Coaching her strategy in words she could not yet wield would have wasted her money.
I tell you both stories because if you are deciding where to invest — coaching or English tutoring — the honest answer starts with a diagnosis most providers cannot give, because most providers only sell one of the two.
Choose English Training First If…
You rehearse sentences before speaking in meetings. Your written English needs a colleague’s review before it goes to important people. You avoid speaking situations — calls, presentations, small talk — that you would accept happily in your native language. People ask you to repeat yourself more than rarely.
If that is you, language is your bottleneck. Fix it first, because it caps everything else.
Choose Coaching First If…
Colleagues understand you easily but your career has plateaued anyway. You are strong 1-on-1 but invisible in rooms of ten. You cannot articulate — in any language — what you want your next three years to look like. Your problem is influence, positioning, or confidence rather than comprehension.
If that is you, more vocabulary will not fix a strategy gap.
