How Long Does It Take to Learn Business English? An Honest Timeline

The dishonest answer is any fixed number. Fluency depends on where you start, how many hours you practise, and — this is the one nobody mentions — whether those hours involve speaking or just studying.
The Honest Framework
Researchers at the US Foreign Service Institute, who have trained diplomats in languages for seventy years, measure progress in hours, not months. For a professional with intermediate English — the level of most of my incoming students — reaching confident business fluency typically takes 200–400 hours of active use.
Now the part that changes everything: those hours are not equal. An hour of silent app drills is worth a fraction of an hour spent speaking under mild pressure — a real conversation, with feedback, about your actual work.
